Wildlife experiences in the taiga forest in Lentiira, east of Finland. Different programs for summer and winter times with a great opportunity to observe and photograph brown bears, wolverines, elk and if enough luck, also wolves and owls.

DAY 1: Arrival Kajaani - Lentiira

Arrival at Kajaani Airport and transfer to your accommodation (approximately 2 hours).

Upon arrival, check into your rooms and after dinner, you will be presented with your program for the coming week. With the guide, we will discuss clothing and guidelines for enjoying the winter environment. Your accommodation is located in the heart of the small hamlet of Lentiira: in the evening, don't hesitate to scan the sky in search of the magical dance of the Northern Lights!

DAYS 2 to 6: Lentiira/Kainuu

Day 2: Snowy Landscapes and Dippers, Kuhmo 4-5 hours (full day)

Today we will depart for Kuhmo, a town of approximately 7,500 inhabitants whose economy is based on timber production and processing. Along the way, we'll enjoy the scenery and visit a riverbank to photograph dippers and snow-covered trees. We'll warm up at a cozy little café that offers many local specialties.

Day 3:

Snowshoeing excursion (2 hours)

The best way to discover the Nordic winter and the landscapes of the far north is to explore them on snowshoes! Hike through nature in search of animal tracks, and your expert guide's explanations will help you understand how nature and animals survive in winter.

Ice fishing (2 hours)

After a walk on the frozen lake to reach the best spots, and a presentation on ice fishing techniques and equipment, we'll settle in to practice this traditional Finnish pastime. The fish caught will either be released back into the water or used for our meal.

Smoke sauna in the late afternoon/evening

New Year's Eve (December 31st) will be celebrated with a traditional feast, predictions for the new year, and a countdown to the arrival of the new year with local sparkling wine.

Day 4: Hike to the Wolverine Hides (4-6 hours, full day)

After a short drive, we'll set off on snowshoes or Altai skis to the hides, wooden cabins for a chance to observe the animals of the taiga forest, including the rare wolverine, also known as the carcajou. This requires patience. The hide is equipped with seats and a composting toilet. While waiting for the animals to appear, we'll enjoy lunch in the heated cabin.

Day 5: Reindeer and Ride

Today we will be discover the world of reindeers. we'll enjoy a short reindeer sleigh ride by domestic reindeer. An opportunity to see and touch these mythical animals who help Santa Claus. After we will search for the wild forest reindeer which are the orignal reindeer in Finland.

Day 6: Altai Skiing (2-3 hours)

After an introduction to altai skiing, we'll set off to explore the taiga forest on altai skis, which are shorter and wider than cross-country skis, providing better flotation on the snow. In the evening, weather permitting, we'll present a slideshow of photos of Finnish nature.

Northern Lights Photography Excursion (2-3 hours) Depending on the weather, we'll head out in the evening to observe and photograph the Northern Lights, the aurora borealis. Your guide will explain and offer tips for photographing the aurora based on your camera equipment.

After a transfer by vehicle, we'll be warmly dressed and ready to observe and photograph the aurora borealis.

Sauna On certain days, a wood-fired sauna will be available, as well as the smoke sauna, the most traditional of the four types of saunas.

DAY 7: Departure for Kajaani

After breakfast, departure for Kajaani airport.
